My father has managed a small business for my entire life, always tracking his finances with traditional handwritten notebooks. Every transaction gets recorded manually so taxes can be prepared later. The challenge is that his accountant requires everything in Excel, yet my dad never learned computer skills growing up and has avoided the software completely.

For a long time he paid someone else to transfer the handwritten notes into a spreadsheet. This approach worked but added ongoing expenses he hoped to eliminate without success.

What pushed me to create this project

During a recent visit home I saw my dad bent over his notebook again, logging another day of sales by hand. I showed him some basic Excel steps and he picked them up quickly. Still, the actual typing of all those rows consumed far too many hours each week.

Entering long columns of numbers is not easy to master later in life, especially without early computer exposure. That realization led me to explore using Claude to remove the repetitive typing altogether.

Turning handwritten bills into a spreadsheet

I built a straightforward Claude project with clear instructions for converting his handwritten receipts into clean Excel rows. First I created a sample file and completed the initial entries myself, then uploaded both the sample and photos of his actual bills.

Claude completed the remaining data quickly. Work that once took hours now finished in minutes. Occasional errors appeared, yet reviewing the output proved much simpler than typing everything from scratch.

Because Claude projects retain their settings, my dad now opens the project, starts a fresh chat, uploads his latest spreadsheet and photos, and lets the tool handle the entry. No formulas or formatting details to learn, and no extra payments required.

Is this worth the bigger picture cost of AI?

I remain cautious about AI overall. The environmental demands of data centers and rising hardware costs are real concerns that cannot be overlooked. The advantages do not always justify the drawbacks.

Yet watching my dad at 65, someone who always believed Excel was beyond his reach, now complete his own spreadsheets after one afternoon of setup changed my view. He saves both time and money each week on a task that once felt impossible.

The satisfaction on his face after finishing his first independent Excel file is something I will never forget. In that single instance the broader tradeoffs seemed justified.
