If Neymar symbolized Brazil for more than a decade, Erling Haaland embodied the future. Norway's striker scored a brace, almost single-handedly decided the outcome against one of the eternal title favorites, and guided his country to a World Cup quarterfinal, an unprecedented achievement. Yet at the final whistle Haaland spoke not of himself: This means everything, he said. I am 25 and have never experienced anything like it. I wish I were in Oslo right now celebrating with everyone. I think this night will change many things in Norway.

He later offered perhaps the clearest explanation for the contrast between the two sides: Brazil has more than 200 million people expecting victory over us. We have 5.5 million people who celebrate in the streets no matter what happens. That is why for us there is no pressure. We simply came to enjoy and play our football. The difference was visible on the pitch.

Norway played with freedom. Brazil looked tense. Carlo Ancelotti later admitted the match slipped away after long spells when his team had felt in control: I think we deserved to win, the Italian coach said. This is not the end of the road. It is the beginning of a new cycle. We must keep working, keep improving and find new ideas.

Ancelotti was repeatedly asked whether the disappointment would linger, yet he tried to stay positive: We are very sad, but tomorrow we will already start thinking about the future of the team. We have a good base of young players alongside the veterans who can continue. Even he knew this evening would be remembered not for tactical analysis but for the images.
