My grandson has always kept some distance from us. I remind myself this stems from his arrival during the pandemic, when chances to connect were limited.

Why does my attempt at a hug seem to make him uneasy? I expected all my grandkids to return my affection openly. Balancing my desire to show love with respect for his boundaries, I move forward with some hesitation.

The original plan called for me to watch my two grandsons at their home on Saturday evening. As usual, I confirmed details by text the prior night. In reply, she asked if I would rather have them stay overnight at our place. I paused to consider what that might mean. Was this a way to arrange some free time?

Guilt quickly followed. My offers to babysit had decreased after I mentioned needing a break to my grown children. Should I not welcome extra hours with the grandkids who bring me so much happiness?

I felt torn about the arrangement

What began as a short babysitting shift now risked stretching into two full days. On Sunday I had hoped to rest after a demanding week and get ready for the one ahead. An overnight visit would limit that time significantly.

Guilt prevailed. I said I would follow whatever the family preferred, whether I stayed there or they came to us. Building those delicate ties mattered more. When told they would arrive after lunch, I assumed the boys had decided. That was not entirely true.

The younger one was eager to come, yet the older, more anxious boy remained uncertain, according to my son. I wanted my grandson to decide freely about staying. I raised the topic carefully so it would not sound like reluctance on my part. My son assured me he would adjust fine. I remained doubtful.

When my son arrived with the boys and the older one held on tightly, my concerns increased. He repeated that everything would be okay. At departure time the clinging continued, with repeated requests for one more hug that my son granted. He even offered that his son could phone before bedtime if needed.

I created a plan to ease my grandson into the visit

Once the choice was set, I committed fully to making the day enjoyable. My first step was asking the oldest grandson to join the overnight stay. As a confident leader who feels at home here, he would be a helpful presence.

After his parents agreed, I added incentives like a movie night and a bike trip to the park. The boys released energy through running, climbing, and splashing in puddles the way young boys do. Soon after returning, their cousin arrived and any leftover worry disappeared.

They played with new toys downstairs while I made dinner. They finished eating, showered, and put on pajamas quickly so they could watch the film. I brought popcorn and small treats, and we sat close on the couch. Bedtime passed without requests to call home, and I did not suggest it. When my son texted to check in, I could honestly say all was well.

The next morning I treated them to waffles. While they played downstairs again, the oldest grandson took a soccer ball to the chin and lost his loose tooth. The parents arrived during the commotion, which turned the moment lighter. They visited briefly then left before lunch, giving me time to handle my own tasks.

Stepping outside our usual limits built stronger ties and greater resilience

Looking back, I wondered if my worries had been overstated. Everyone enjoyed the time together.

I should have recognized my son's instinct to comfort his sensitive child. I should also have recalled how much recovery time I needed while raising my own three active boys.

It is not my role to judge, just as my mother refrained from questioning my choices when I was raising my sons. I have decided to let the parents determine what suits their children best without offering unasked advice.
